Packing food and drinks

Overview

When packing food for school or nursery, it’s important to pick items that are easy to eat and enjoyable for your child. Start by choosing foods that your child is already familiar with and enjoys. This familiarity can make eating in a different environment less stressful and more comforting. For example, if your child loves a particular type of sandwich or fruit, including these in their lunchbox can help them feel more at ease during mealtime.

Parents have found it helpful to pack foods that are easy to handle, especially if their child has difficulties with fine motor skills or is sensitive to certain textures. Foods that are simple to pick up and eat can make the process smoother and more enjoyable for them. Think about items like cut-up fruits, cheese sticks, or small sandwiches that are easy to manage.

Involving your child in the preparation and packing of their lunch can also help. This can be as simple as allowing them to choose the flavour of yogurt or pick between different snacks. This way, you could let them make some choices about what goes into their lunchbox.
